Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are all classes recorded?
A: No. Recording can only be done in the rooms listed below that are wired for audio, and only when an instructor has completed a request for recording.
Q: How is lecture recording initiated?
A: At the end of each semester we send out forms to all faculties teaching in the lecture theatres that are recordable from our central location. They are asked, among other questions, if they want their classes recorded. When the form is returned to us we enter all requests in our data base. (We ask you to sign the form if recording classes is required.) In some departments, requests are handled by administrative staff.

Q: How soon are my lecture recording files available?
A: Lecture recording files are available for listening within an hour of the end of the lecture.
Q: In which digital audio formats are the class recordings available?
A: They are available in WMA and MP3
Q: Who is authorized to make lecture recording requests?
A: Only the course lecturer may request lectures to be recorded. If you are a student and you want to have your course lectures recorded, please discuss it with your professor.
Q: If classes are recorded will those recordings be available to the whole world?
A: No. By default, class recordings are only available to the students currently registered in the course and others who are on the course mailing list, unless we are directed otherwise by the instructor.
Q: How do you regulate access to class recordings?
A: All class recordings are password protected. Student web access authentication is handled by IT Services (ACS).
Q: To whom does the copyright belong?
A: As in the past the copyright remains with the lecturer.
Q: I am an instructor for a course, but when I try to access my lecture recordings my password doesn't work (Authorization Required Error).
A: Please, e-mail webmaster@sfu.ca or lectures@sfu.ca. Do not forget to specify the name, number, and section of the course you are teaching, as well as your full name, contact information, and brief description of the problem.
Q: I am teaching a course and I want to allow additional people (for example, TAs) to access my lecture recordings.
A: Please, e-mail webmaster@sfu.ca or lectures@sfu.ca. Do not forget to specify the name, number, and section of the course you are teaching, your full name, contact information, as well as the full name and e-mail address of the person you want to allow to access your lecture recordings.
Q: Are the class recordings archived at the end of the semester?
A: No. At the end of the final exams we delete all class recordings.
Q: My class recordings are on the web, but the files have no sound in them. Why?
A: In order for your files to record correctly, you have to make sure that the microphone is switched on and the volume level is up enough for you to hear yourself through the speakers. If you have any more problems regarding this issue, please contact CTA (AV Services) at 778-782-4828 (room P9301).
