    PARTICIPANTS’ FEEDBACK

    Professor Tarama Symth:

I had a lovely time as well at the lunch. It’s a wonderful opportunity for a professor/instructor to get a student’s point of view on the difficulties (and joys!) of being a CS student. Already, at the school retreat, I was able to bring forward some of the comments made (anonymously of course), in discussion centered around improving teaching and help being offered to students.

A great success overall! Many thanks for giving me the opportunity to participate.

    Shushuang Li:
Thanks for organizing this event. We had a lot of fun talking with Himanayan. She is elegant and erudite.
It was a good chance for us to learn things from the professor’s point of view.
The food was good, and the atmosphere was active.
Hoping we have more funds to organize events like this in the future. :-)

    Caty Liu:
Thank WICS for providing me an opportunity to talk with a CS prof in a very casual and relax way. Although I’m considered as a first year student in CS faculty because I only took few CS courses so far, I feel like having a difficulty in studying computing science. Tamara gave me many value advices about overcoming barries, which helped me think I can still do well in the area I truly love. Though I don’t know much about digital music, I enjoyed the atmosphere that we are like old friends. Hopefully we can continue the mentor lunch event every term!

    Queena Wang:
I had a great time with Professor Tamara and other WICS members. Professor Tamara is very friendly, and easy to approach. She was very kind and patient to explain her research to us. Her research is a very interesting project that combines music and computer. Since most of the music instrument can only produce certain key range due to its size and how they were made. However, by using the latest technology, she can produce new range of the key. Professor Tamara also shares her experiences about how she became a computer scitentist to us. She has strong passion on music, English literature, and computer science. Professor Tamara shows us that if you really like something, just keep doing it, and eventurally you will become success. The lunch was very inspiring and was a wonderful experience for me.

2 - WICS reviewed the past events.

    • IDE workshop had a fewer than expected participation rate. However, a male student attended.
    • Mentor lunch: Attendees thought lunch was informative and fun. One attendee got good advice from the professor as a first year student. Other attendee was very interested in her research, in particular about generating sounds that cannot be produced by physical musical instruments.

    3 - Upcoming Events

    • International Women’s Day Lunch: Kristina, Youna and Sharon had a meeting to organize the event. They talked about the budget, which is $350. The money will be spent towards printing, games, and food. They decided to have easy to distribute/eat food such as sushi and samosas along with drinks like tea/coffee. They planned to have a spinning wheel. Greg remembered that the department has one and the team can ask Daniela about it. Another activity suggested is a power point presentation. WICS will as Amanda and Tracy for funding for the event. The event is decided to be a one hour lunch from 13.30 to 14.30. Kristina suggested a room change for attracting more people. Agreed location is ASB 9840, which will be confirmed once spoken with Tracy. There is still the food certificate problem. WICS is looking for a member with food certificate. In addition, WICS decided to give out prizes. Greg provided SFU bookstore gift certificates and Renaissance coupons. Cornerstone stores will be asked to provide further gifts. WICS may collaborate with WEGS for this event.
    • Surrey Lab Tour: Time of the event is decided to be March 25, between 2 and 4 pm. Jenny and Shannon volunteered to help in Surrey. The event will be open to everybody. WICS executives will email Chris Walters to invite students from Surrey campus. The discussion topic will be confirmed by Tarama, the graduate student in Surrey.
    • Surrey Open House: Will be on March 4, starting from 4.30. Volunteers need to arrive earlier (3.30). WICS is looking for volunteers to host WICS table.
    • Try/Catch: Event preparations are going very well. Sponsorship, poster, brochure and website are almost done. Queena, Charlotte and Jenny will help with the sponsorship. Information packages will be sent to a subset of 28 schools in Burnaby and Vancouver area. Poster ideas have been discussed and decided to put student faces or something similar instead of an iPod picture.
