    §  CSJF radio heard about our event show. Youna and I went there and talked about WICS.

    ·      March 24th is Ada Lovelace Day

    o  First programmer is actually women! Ada Lovelace. Yes! Augusta Ada Byron King, Countess of Lovelace (1815-1852), born Augusta Ada Byron, is known for having written a description of Charles Babbage’s early mechanical general-purpose computer, the analytical engine. She is today appreciated as the “first programmer” since she was writing programs for a machine that Babbage had not yet built. She also foresaw the capability of computers to go beyond mere calculating.

     

    o  It is an international day of blogging (videologging, podcasting, comic drawing etc.!) to draw attention to the achievements of women in technology and science.

    ·      XX Evening event

    o  a very cool social event where you get the opportunity to network with local women who is in the field of science, engineering and technology. 

    o  They come from diverse educational backgrounds, and are at many different stages in their careers. Come to the event, you’ll be inspired and informed by their stories. Meanwhile, you will have the opportunity to meet with and ask question of these 35 potential mentors in a relaxed setting!

     -2 groups of past winners

     -sponsors: FAS, SISTERS, UPS, COMPUTER SCIENCE

     -maybe we should go talk Google and future shop

     -$3000 is overbudget only has $1500 in account

     -check with Caty with tryCatch budgets

     - sumo, and Janice can sign signatures for chictech/trycatch cheques etc

     - need to add two more to replace two people who have left

    - motion: to remove Jane Zhu and Santi Santi as signing authorities from the chictech/trycatch account, and to add Daniela Dadalau and Youna Chung as the new signing authorities passed unanimously

    -set up trycatch meeting on Thursday

    Office Report
    Treasury reimbursed Vivian and Liyang for their expenses on decorations and print outs.

    Past Event: Surrey Open House
    -Shannon, Carrie and Chris helped for this event. Their help is appreciated.
    -The event was successful. Turnout was more than expected. A lot of high school girls were interested. This gave the hosts a chance to promote Try/Catch.
    -Many high school girls dropped by
    Upcoming Event: International Women’s Day Lunch
    -Members decided on the menu (pizza, vegetable platter, cake, pop and chocolate)
    -Some volunteers agreed upon meeting to decorate the room on Sunday, March 7 and the remaining decorations decided to be done on March 8, in the morning.
    -Gifts were decided (bookstore cards, coffee shop cards, and big prize: gift certificate from a beauty salon)
    Upcoming Event CANCELLED!!! Surrey Lab Tour
    -Surrey Campus contacts decided not to proceed with this event due to lack of volunteers.
    -WICS members talked about alternative events: One possibility is to have a brown bag lunch. Not many people were interested
    -Another possibility is to have an afternoon movie. Suggested movie is “Pirates of the Silicon Valley”, very much related with computing.
    Upcoming Event: End of Semester bowling (should get started)
    -WICS should start planning the end of semester event. It will be a bowling activity. Possibly, WICS can have this as a joint event with CSSS.

    —¦ Event will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, from September 28 - October 2, 2010
    —¦ Vivian will be looking for funding from various sources for any volunteers
    —¦ GHC offers some scholarships, these opportunities will be open on March 8th. Act early to apply if you are interested.
    —¦ Last year, Jenny attended GHC. She shared her experience with the members. Jenny: “3 day event, if you volunteer you don’t need to pay the entrance fee. Food is provided. However, you are responsible of costs for accomodation + flight.”
    —¦ Vivian, who also attended previously, told that this is a very good opportunity to network and previous attendees ended up with coop opportunities
    —¦ WICS is expecting news from the department about funding for potential participants.
    Re-election announce
    —¦ Berfu and Vivian will be leaving in summer semester so WICS is looking for new members.
    —¦ Open positions are: president and secretary
    —¦ WICS decided to promote these positions, especially advertise them at the Women’s Day Lunch.
    —¦ Motto for the promotion of these positions: this is more likely a very valuable opportunity not a responsible
